“La Gioconda“, Amilcare Ponchielli‘s masterpiece, is an opera that saw the triumphant international debut of the then unknown soprano Maria Callas in the Arena in 1947. The intense melodrama in 4 acts, written to verses by Arrigo Boito, is set in 17th century Venice. It is one of Ponchielli’s best-known operas written in the second half of the 19th century. Besides the famous “Dance of the Hours” and Gioconda’s suicidal aria, the opera contains many other lyrical examples of post-romantic sensibility.
Chorus Master is Ulisse Trabacchin while orchestra, chorus and technicians are from the Fondazione Arena di Verona.
