The Ballo of Fondazione Arena returned to the Teatro Romano in August 2023, after an eight-year absence: the title chosen was the ballet “Zorba the Greek”, written especially for the Arena in 1988 and directed by the composer himself based on an idea by choreographer Lorca Massine. A version revived in Verona in 1990 and 2002, then repeated all over the world, thrilling millions of spectators. Even today “Zorba” based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, represents in its plot and music a hymn to life, to the discovery of the other, to overcoming grief, to inner strength, to Greece itself. At the sold-out Teatro Romano for the occasion, the reception was triumphant, with over twenty minutes of rhythmic applause and repeated encores. Credit to the opera, the Arenian Ball coordinated by Gaetano Petrosino in the presence of the author Lorca Massine himself, and the international étoile of excellence involved for the occasion, such as Denys Cherevychko, Davide Dato, Liudmila Konovalova, Eleana Andreoudi and Danilo Notaro.
“Zorba the Greek” will return to the Roman Theater on August 27 and 28, 2024, in the show produced by Fondazione Arena with sets by Filippo Tonon, costume coordination by Silvia Bonetti and lighting by Sergio Toffali.
