Piazza delle Erbe is situated in the area of the Roman Forum, which for many centuries was the hub of the city’s social, economical and political life. The oldest monument in the square is the fountain surmounted by the statue of the Madonna Verona, dating from the Roman period 380 with medieval additions.
The square is overlooked by Palazzo Maffei, a house museum and an extraordinary collection in a unique location, just waiting to be discovered. In front of Palazzo Maffei stands a superb white marble column, on top of which is the lion of St Mark, the symbol of the Republic of Venice.
Surrounded by palaces, towers and statues, among which the Torre dei Lamberti, it is considered one of the most characteristic squares in Italy. Every weekend a colourful fruit and vegetable market is held here.
