“La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi the most performed opera in the world, returns to the Arena di Verona from 2 July. Together with Georges Bizet’s “Carmen“, Giuseppe Verdi’s “Aida” and “Nabucco“, and Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot“, it constitutes one of the great operas scheduled for the 2022 Arena season.
The famous hymn to the joys of wine performed in waltz time, “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici“, with which the first act begins, makes La Traviata, one of the most significant works of Verdi’s genius, familiar even to those who are less expert in opera.
The staged version is the latest and sumptuous production in 19th-century style conceived by Franco Zeffirelli with refined costumes by Maurizio Millenotti. An opera performed in 2019 at the inauguration of the Festival and in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, which just a few days after the death of the Tuscan Maestro, has become a sort of artistic testament.
Verdi’s masterpiece will be conducted for its eight performances by Marco Armiliato.
Reruns of Verdi’s “La Traviata” in the Arena are scheduled for 9, 15, 22 and 30 July,  6 and 22 August and 1 September.
