The annual summer festival of the Arena di Verona returns for its 99th year of celebrating opera. Spread across 46 evenings, this festival puts on five opera productions that include world-famous works by Georges Bizet (“Carmen“, from 17 June), Giuseppe Verdi (“Aida” from 18 June, “Nabucco“, from 25 June and “La Traviata” from 2 July), and Giacomo Puccini (“Turandot“, from 4 August).
The Music Director of Festival 2022 is Maestro Marco Armiliato: Genoese by birth, international by career and vocation, he is the standard bearer of Italian melodrama in the world, from Vienna to Tokyo, from La Scala to the Metropolitan in New York. Superintendent and Artistic Director is the world-famous soprano Cecilia Gasdia.
Out of almost 100 world-class artists, including young up-and-comers and established stars, 35 (more than a third of the total) will make their eagerly awaited debut on the Arena stage.
There are also ballets and concerts, including the “Roberto Bolle and Friends” Gala on 20 July, a not-to-be-missed evening with the best in international dance. On 12 August Orff’s “Carmina Burana returns in a memorable and scenic concert and on 25 August it’s the turn of “Plácido Domingo in Verdi Opera Night” with three acts of Verdi’s operas in full stage form.
Take in the wonders of attending a performance in the Arena, the ancient Roman amphitheatre that is the world’s largest theater under the stars. Be part of the lighting of the mocoleto (small candles), on the arena’s stone seats as the night grows dark and the performances start.
